LGBT Hate Crime Victims: 1990s to 2000s
The '90s brought with them a new wave of violence against LGBT community members. There was a surge in reported incidents of abuse, rape and murder which involved gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people. The numbers went increasingly high, with Brazilian gay rights NGO reporting that around 3,196 murders in Brazil, committed over the period of 1980 to 2009, were homophobic.
Similarly, the Federal Bureau of Investigation posted worrying statistics from the last two decades where about 1,256 hate crimes against LGBT persons were reported in 2007 alone. This was a six percent increase from the previous year, when acts of gender-based violence hit an all-time high. According to the Bureau, there was a fifteen to sixteen percent rise in the LGBT hate crimes in 2006 compared to the year before. In the year 2008, approximately 17.6 percent of the hate crimes were gender identity based, targeting 1,617 victims of the LGBT community.
Not only that, the past few years have seen some of the worst cases of violence against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, with the most recent being the Orlando shooting on 12 June, 2016.
The data that has come in during the 2000s signifies the need for urgent action. According to a report in 2004, almost fourteen percent of the hate crimes committed on the basis of sexual orientation were against gays and lesbians, while one percent of these targeted bisexuals. Out of the total documented cases of gender-based violence, two percent were against heterosexuals. Ten years later, another report by the Bureau recorded that there had been an increase of more than seven percent in LGBT hate crimes.
In 2014, the LGBT community members became victims of various violent episodes, sixty-one percent of which were attacks on gay men.
The FBI noted that the data in 2014 was similar to that of 2011, which also had a high number of LGBT hate crimes reported. Almost 1,572 violent acts were committed against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people, making up a percentage of 20.4 of the total documented hate crimes that year.
Various reports by human rights organizations and authorities have noted that all the hate crimes which are committed throughout the country are increasingly violent in nature, particularly those pertaining to sexuality and gender identity. It was discovered that the hate crimes carried out in the name of religion or ideology saw only one rape and murder, while there were six rapes and five murders attempted on the basis of perceived sexual orientation.
The cases of LGBT hate crimes during the 1990s also caught the attention of people across the globe. Several of these violent acts made headlines everywhere due to the brutality and aggressive nature of the crime. Most of the perpetrators of these crimes were tried in court and handed out life sentences, to be served until death.
In the '90s, eighteen cases of violence against LGBT community members were reported, which claimed the lives of twenty people. The concerned authorities pointed out that the scale
